The Astyanax Quarterly · Winter 2026 · The founding issue

Submissions open.

Until 31 October.

Until now The Astyanax has published online. This winter it goes into print.

The first Quarterly will collect between eight and twelve pieces of new writing: essays and criticism, fiction, and poetry, across literature, history, philosophy, classics, and politics. There is no theme. The standard is the one we always hold to: an argument that holds, prose that earns its reader, and work that adds to the record rather than rehearsing it.

We are looking for sustained argument rather than a survey: an essay that makes one case and earns its conclusion. Fiction that is complete in itself. Poems sent in a group, so we can read your range.

Essays & criticism2,000 to 6,000 words
Fiction2,000 to 5,000 words
PoetryThree to eight poems

Every piece is read by two editors. Accepted work goes through a full edit with you before it is typeset. Decisions for this issue will be sent by 12 December, and the book appears in the spring.

Nothing previously published, in print or online, and nothing under consideration elsewhere while we read it. You keep your copyright; we ask for first print rights. The full terms are on the submit page.
