Daffodil
The Narcissus will not wilt.

The child weeps as the
Narcissus wilts in the vase on the kitchen window.
It doesn’t wilt quick enough,
not for the child ready to bloom.
The Narcissus fights against
its wilting.
It blocks out all the daylight,
pushing the child into the darkness and the cold,
it traps them below the vase.
The Narcissus won’t wilt,
it just blooms louder and brighter until the child
crumples up like an out-of-season daisy.
The child sobs,
praying that the Narcissus will wilt.
Praying that they can get into the sunlight
once more and burst into their own vibrant colours.
